Alternatives to the new iPad

Apple’s next-gen tablet, the ‘new iPad’ was launched last week. The Apple conference marked the end of months of speculation, debate and argument about what the device held in store.

The rumours had ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous, but the end result is pretty special. Still, it’s by no means the only tablet option available. There are plenty of other great gadgets out there that won’t cost the Earth (and this month’s rent).

So at the risk of angering the hoards of Apple fans out there, here is my pick of the best tablet alternatives to the new iPad:

Galaxy Tab 2

This tablet was only just announced at MWC, so don’t expect it to hit our stores for a little while.

The 10.1-inch version of the Galaxy Tab 2 is almost identical to its predecessor. But don’t let that put you off; Samsung is expected to aim this at the mid-level price range, so you’ll be able to pick it up for less than the first one’s original price.

Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire is my next choice. We’ve still got no word on when this device will hit our stores, but it can’t be far away now!

Sitting firmly at the low-end of the tablet market, the quality of the Kindle Fire far outweighs its price tag. It’s been going down a storm in the US, and is sure to sell by the shed-load over here.

BlackBerry PlayBook 2

And finally, BlackBerry’s PlayBook 2 is due for release before the end of the year, and promises to be an impressive offering.

Running BB10, BlackBerry’s next operating system, the Playbook will be a smooth ride – but could be a little too expensive for some people’s tastes.

Apple is certainly upping its game with the new iPad, but it isn’t the only one. As tablet competition heats up, every manufacturer will be doing its best to impress.
