There are certain times of the year when we’ve been programmed to flock to the sales, but are they really the best times to make our purchases? I’ve been looking at the prices of products on PriceRunner to analyse when we should be looking to schedule some of those bigger investments. And since we’re still in the mire of an ‘economic downturn’, it makes sense to become a savvier shopper.
Gadgets galore
If it’s an Apple product you’re after, bear in mind they issue new ranges in June and October. So if you’re not too concerned about the latest and greatest, you can pick up a bargain in May and September.
Tech products are quite predictable; cameras tend to refresh lines in May, so April is a good time for an investment. The January sales prices for the majority of consumer tech usually can’t be beaten, so it’s worth braving the shops for a high-ticket item like a TV or Blu-ray player, if that’s what you’re after.
Setting up shop at home
As the kids head to back to school in August, shops always offer great deals on computers, stationary and all the accessories that go with them. This trend continues into September as a new generation leaves home for university, with the addition of budget home appliances like toasters and kettles.
Relax in style
New styles for furniture are usually launched bi-annually, so try redecorating in either January or July to get the best deals on that three-piece suite you’re after.
If you have space, buy your garden furniture at the end of the summer season and store it for the following year; this is a bargain worth going for if you’ve got a garage. Speaking of garages, dealerships will start to strive for their end-of-year figures and offer some great discounts on cars to start and make space for new models arriving in the New Year.
A new ride
Car dealerships tend to have targets, so head to the forecourt just before the end of the quarter (March, June, September, December) to get a better deal on your new ride. You could also treat yourself to a convertible in November; it’s the season with the least demand so you are well placed to get a great offer.
Stock up your cupboards
We all know December is the time for supermarket wars – stock up on bubbles and nibbles that you can store.
If you’re organised and buy at the right time, you can get some great deals and save your spare cash to pay for some much-needed sunshine abroad.
