The long-awaited Sony PS Vita handheld console went on sale at midnight on Wednesday, marking Sony’s new affront against casual gaming efforts from the likes of Apple and its iPhone.

To that end, the Vita boasts graphical prowess to nearly match that of the Playstation 3, thanks to an ARM Cortex A9 quad-core processor and a mesmerising 5-inch OLED display.

The games, meanwhile, boast some of the highest production values ever seen in handheld titles – just take a look at Uncharted: Golden Abyss for an example.

The launch at GAME was met with queues around the block, a gift-wrapped Vita for the very first customer and women dressed as futuristic mascots from WipEout 2048 – one of the console’s key launch titles.
